SAMi (Sperm Analysis Machine Intelligence) was developed by Andrologists and Computer Scientists at the University of Nottingham, specifically to provide semen analysis and sperm performance data much more efficiently and reliably than current manual methods.
The recognition of a need for automation in semen analysis has grown over many years. Not only is there a need to move away from manual methods that lack accuracy and reproducibility but also a need to catch up with the other fields in laboratory medicine.
SAMi is the only CASA (Computer Assisted Semen Analysis) system to be validated for human use.
It provides a simple intuitive solution, allow editing of the captured sperm screen to ensure that a. only sperm are detected and b. missed sperm can be replaced which gives a more reliable sperm concentration and one which is in line with the haemocytometer (Tomlinson et al, 2010).
